A current Homeland Security Research Project in the US is designed to prevent terror by analyzing human voice and other biometric parameters. Scientists are trying to find out which kind of high-end technology is ideal to identify individuals with terrorist background. Nervosity does change the voice even if not recognized by people, but by machines. This helps us to prevent terror, says Bob Burns, deputy head of the research agency. He has already spent 20 million US Dollars and is observing all field of biometrics.

VOICETRUST presents a showcase on disabled-friendly authentication by voice. At the CeBIT trade fair booth of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior VOICETRUST demonstrates from 2 to 6 March 2010 its interaction with the new identity card issued as of November. The ID in check card format will not only be clearly smaller than today but also clearly more powerful. It will allow the secure handling of online banking, visits to the authorities, and eCommerce.  All this is based on the electonic identity (eID), which will be stored on a chip and can be read wireless. VOICETRUST can make sure in combination with the use of human voice that it is the eID card holder in person who interacts with the authorities, let's say when ordering a new PIN number for the smartcard. The worldwide turnover of the biometrics market is expected to reach 9.4 billion US Dollars by 2014, says a recent study of the International Biometric Group. For Europe alone, Frost & Sullivan had published an estimate of one billion Euros turnover for 2015. And the Roland Berger Strategy Consultants have published figures for the biometrics market in Germany (currently 216 Millionen Euros) which is going to pass the 300 million Euro mark already this year.

Representatives of workers unions largely welcome new technologies in the area of biometrics within their companies. This is one of the results of a study of German BITKOM, the association of the ICT industry. Three quarters of the participants in this study stated that biometrics are a good way to control access for high-security areas. 71 per cent think that such authentication technologies can make processes within organizations easier.

Two thirds agree with biometric password reset systems for their desktop accounts at work. „Biometrics combines easy handling with extreme security“, says Professor Dieter Kempf, Member of the Board of BITKOM.

According to a report of Stuttgarter Zeitung in Germany scientists of the Leibniz-Institute for Wild Animal Research IZW in Berlin use voice recognition to count rhinoceroses. The biologists observe the so-called Sabah-rhinos on the island Borneo, that apparently love to sing while bathing in the marsh. During their observations they want to count the rhinos, this is why the scientists use a modern voice authentication technology to identify the animals.

There seems to be no crisis in the market for biometrics in Europe, says Information Week. Market researchers expect an average growth rate of more than 25 per cent every year for the upcoming five years. Especially the convergence of physical and logical admission controls is advancing, says the report. According to Information Week, even in 2009 the market for biometric products succeeded to grow in Europe and reached a turnover of more than 216 millions Euro. Frost & Sullivan recently published their study on the »EMEA Biometrics Market«: By 2015, they expect a turnover of one billion Euros with biometrical solutions in Europe.

Two days after VOICETRUST had presented its Banking Suite, the German Association of IT industry (BITKOM) and Federal Authorities have demanded an increase in security for Online Banking.

In 2009, there was an increase in fraud by 50 per cent in online banking. BITKOM estimates a new record of 2,900 incidents of phishing in Germany this year causing a loss of 11 million Euros.

After introducing iTAN for online banking transactions new malware has come up which successfully attacks this new security method. Entering passcodes in y keyboard is not enough to prevent fraud, BITKOM says.

The new VOICETRUST Banking Suite enables banks to allow their customers set up a transaction limit in online banking by which voice authentication is activated.

Tonight top news during the German call center convention VOICE Days plus in Nuremberg: during the award ceremony for the best voice dialog systems from the German-speaking countries, VOICETRUST and its partner atip were awarded for the solution VOICESAFE. This mobile safe for secrets that turns a mobile device into a biometric safe became winner in the category "Best Innovation Award". VOICESAFE is "the most progressive solution, with an innovative design and an innovative business model", says the jury. VOICETRUST "has solved an urgent problem of daily life": securely storing logins, passwords and pin numbers.

On the winner's podium, we are in very good company: Deutsche Telekom with the Best Practice Award, the Swedish furniture stores IKEA with the Best Enterprise Service Award and Deutsche Bank with a special prize for the best phone banking portal.

The German TV channel SAT.1 is famous for its investigative show „Akte 09“ (file 09).
The magazine has just revealed how easy it is to obtain customer data from call centers via phone. The reporters noted down license plate numbers and called five car insurance companies in a row. By starting an argument, the smart reporters made all five call center agents read out the complete adresses of their clients, as if to „compare data“. A case for VOICETRUST Caller Identification which allows to doubtlessly verify the identity of a client over the phone.

In a special edition on „IT Security“ from September 2009, the German Newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung states: „Voice biometrices can be operated no matter where the user is, and it cannot be manipulated.“ Someone possessing a cell phone can use the up-to-date voice authentication solutions just as Ali Baba did in the fairy tale ’Open Sesame’ – and benefit from it without having to buy new hardware. „Who really has an iris scanner or a fingerprint scanner in his carry-on luggage? A phone is a must-have device nowadays. What is more, the increased speed for the verification of an identity and the fact that the whole procedure is fully automized lead to a clear reduction in costs“, is the bottom-line of the report.

The Editors of silicon.de report about biometrics establishing in the daily life of companies. Technologies for voice authentication rank first, writes IT journalist Sibylle Gaßner. In many call centers the "voice as a passport" has become routine. Voice authentication technology providers now target the rapidly growing cell phone market where the maje advantage of the fact that no extra hardware is needed - a cell phone is enough to verify a person's identity.

US cell phone carrier Verizon has evaluated the readiness of people to undergo biometric voice verification. It is higher than with any other biometrics technology. Verizon ranks voice biometrics 'high' in usability like none of the seven technologies in this comparison, says a study published recently.

Speech Technology Magazine reporter Erik Barkin and famous blogger in the voice biometrics scene wrote an article about VOICETRUST's new iPhone application VOICESAFE. Barkin says: "The VOICESAFE iPhone application is part of a bid to build greater mindshare for voice biometric technology and build confidence in its effectiveness and security. In a couple of days, we are going to issue a voice-secured VoiceSafe for the Apple iPhone©. The VoiceSafe, currently a beta version, will give iPhone users access to their PIN numbers and passwords wherever they are. The application requires the voice authentication of the user. In other words: No one else can access my data, even if somebody tries very hard to imitate my voice.

The branch association TeleTrusT has announced a new line-up. General Manager Dr. Günther Welsch moves to the German Federal Department for the Interior and becomes responsible for IT security. As of June, Dr. Holger Mühlbauer will become new General Manager. The jurist and data security expert was working before for the German Institute for Norms and its equivalent Austrian Standards. VOICETRUST is member of TeleTrusT. The association wants to create a framework of trust and reliability for the use of ICT technologies. In his opening remarks for the eleventh German IT security convention in Bonn-Bad Godesberg, Federal Secretary of the Interior Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble focused on the topic "Avoiding a Crisis in Confidence for the IT Business". Security and availability of the World Wide Web is the linchpin of our entire global information society, the politician said. Schäuble warned: "Every form of IT crisis could lead to an enormous economical damage and question  people's trust in the Internet“. Germany's IT industry could make a valuable contribution to meeting this challenge with its know-how in IT security, the Federal Secretary pointed out.
